Town of Southold, North Fork
Hamlets in the Town of Southold
are impacted primarily by aircraft
approaching from north or west and
departing from KHTO in the east.
Hamlets most impacted by air traffic to East Hampton Airport include Jamesport, Laurel, Mattituck, New Suffolk, Cutchogue, East Marion and Orient.
On approach to KHTO, aircraft transition from the North Shore Route (NSR) and can impact a broad swath of residences from Jamesport to Cutchogue.
On departure from KHTO, if the ECHO departure route is used, the impact falls primarily on the hamlets of East Marion and Orient.
When the infamous FAA mandated North Shore Route was introduced in 2012, these tranquil hamlets on the North Fork, miles from KHTO, were inundated with aircraft transitioning to/from KHTO, which also crossed over Southampton Town hamlets. East Hampton Town residents were largely sheltered from the very worst impacts of traffic on approach to KHTO.
There is a small privately-owned airport in Mattituck.
